Should You Wash Your Car in the Winter?

The Minneapolis winters can be pretty harsh on our vehicles, making maintenance this season more important than ever. One thing people tend to forget to do during this time of year is to wash their cars. Just because it is colder outside doesn’t mean that you can get away without washing your vehicle. 

All our vehicles are more susceptible to getting dirtier with rain and snow. As a result dirt, road salt, and other forms of moisture can cling to your vehicle. If you choose to ignore it, it can cause irreversible damage to your car, both inside and out.

Why Should You Wash Your Car?

Washing your car is important year-round. As mentioned before, the built-up moisture on your vehicle can linger and cause rust on your metallic parts if not cleaned off. For instance, your vehicle’s paint can chip and crack and peel. Rust damage can sometimes cost hundreds or thousands of dollars to fix.



How Often Should I Wash My Car in the Winter?

Washing your vehicle may not be the most exciting thing on your to-do list this season, but you should never skip it. To prevent unexpected issues such as rust and corrosion, we recommend washing your car 1-2 times a month.

If you store your vehicle in a garage, you can get away with going longer between washes versus a vehicle that is always parked outside. When washing your car or taking your vehicle to a car wash, be careful when servicing it in below-freezing temperatures. This can cause the moisture to freeze onto your vehicle, instead of providing an effective wash. Our last tip is to focus on areas that are susceptible to rust, such as the undercarriage.
